Have you ever looked into the mirror sometimes and just wondered why your skin looked dull and lacking glow? Dull skin is a combination of various factors. Here are just 7 reasons why your skin could be dull:
#1: You don’t drink enough water
You’ve heard this before! Up to 60% of the human body is made up of water and the skin contains 64% water. When you’re dehydrated, your skin can become dry (and dehydration can make your skin appear dull). When your hydrated, your skin will retain more moisture. So continuously drink water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated. What’s more, water helps flush out toxins from the body, giving you overall health!
#2: Your skin has been piling up with dead skin cells
We shed millions of skin cells every day. We may not see it, but it happens. And unless we are doing something actively to remove the top layer of dead skin cells from our face, it stays on the top layer of our skin causing the skin to look dull.
One of the easiest ways to slough away dead skin cells is to use a Gentle Exfoliating Facial Scrub two to three times a week! As long as you choose a scrub that is gentle enough, you’ll be sure that you won’t experience any damage to the skin. Avoid using scrubs that have rough edges like walnut shells as that could actually damage or scratch the skin. We love that ours is paraben-free and made from natural rice beads (no microbeads!) that works amazing to slough away dead skin cells and give you softer, smoother and brighter skin.
#3: You may be using products that are ineffective
When we talk about skincare, what makes a product really effective lies in the active ingredients of the product. An active ingredient is an ingredient used to treat a specific skin condition. In many cases, many off the shelf skincare products contain very low amounts of active ingredients that actually do the work in brightening the skin, reducing wrinkles, etc mainly because, active ingredients can be expensive to include in large percentages in skincare products, and most cosmetic or skincare companies may prefer to include a higher percentage of fillers in their skincare products (like water, or other inexpensive alternatives) that do not contribute to actually helping the skin condition.
Some natural examples of active ingredients that you might find suitable to brighten skin tone would be retinols.
You can try retinols found in a blend of 100% natural and concentrated Natural Rosehip Oil with Grape Seed Oil in our Rosa E Pigmentation Serum that’s been clinically proven to lighten or correct dark spots and pigmentation in just 6 weeks or try the Evening Primrose Oil blend with Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E Oil in Primrose E Radiant Skin Serum for a dull skin pick-me-up!
#4: You lack fruits and vegetables in your diet
We all know vegetables and fruits are good for you (and we’re here to remind you once again!). Nutrition is extremely important to your skin (which is your largest organ, by the way!). It’s important to eat a variety of different types of healthy food ie. leafy green vegetables and fruits of different colour to ensure you get the necessary vitamins and minerals required for a healthy body and healthy skin. Not only that, your immune system will improve from a well-balanced diet and your skin will thank you for it!
#5: You’ve been going under the sun, without sun protection
One of the causes of skin aging is the sun. In a country where we are blessed to have the sun shining down on us 365 days a year, it’s no wonder how much damage the sun can do for our skin. Wearing a sunscreen with minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 helps slow down skin aging and keep skin looking youthful. Invest in a skincare with good active ingredients like Vitamin C Ester (for skin brightening!), Ginkgo biloba, Vitamin E, Grape Seed Extracts, Jojoba Oil, Evening Primrose Oil to help combat fine lines, pigmentation and dull skin.
We love Satin White Day Cream SPF 30 as it contains non-nano titanium dioxide (the active ingredient that helps protect skin from the sun) as it blocks out upto 97% harmful UV rays and it works as a physical sunscreen. Physical sunscreen means that the active ingredient non-nano titanium dioxide only sits physically on the skin’s surface and reflects light and does not penetrate into the skin’s layer, causing harm). Satin White Day Cream SPF 30 is easily absorbed, non-sticky and works as a wonderful primer if you are wearing make-up after.
#6: Hormones, Hormones, Hormones
Another reason that could cause dull skin could be a fluctuation of hormones in your body. Whether it could be due to stress, change in lifestyle (sleeping patterns), or biological changes (pregnancy for example), all these changes can give you a sallow dull complexion. There’s nothing much you can do about hormones, but to acknowledge and to try to minimize and manage stress the best way you can.
#7: You lack regular exercise!
If there’s one of the things you could change (right now) in your lifestyle to get better health and better skin, it would be regular exercise! Any form of exercise will help improve blood circulation throughout the body and in turn, the skin! Whether it’s going for a hike, doing yoga, a morning jog, or cycling, choose one that fits your personality and go for it! It’s easier said than done, but the moment you start exercising and keep the momentum going, you’re going to start seeing and reaping the results! Exercise with a friend or a partner helps to keep the motivation going and keep an exercise diary/log that helps you keep track on what you’ve done.
So there you have it, 7 top reasons why your skin could be dull… But remember, everybody’s skin is different and no one has the exact same skin type, so it’s always important to find something that works best for you!
